Growing a regenerative neighbourhood

Mangaroa Farms sits on land that has been farmed for generations. Building on that long history of working the land, the farm was gifted into a charitable trust in 2021 with a simple question in mind: how might we live more deeply in service to this place? It has grown from there. Today a team of employees and neighbours work side by side, caring for this place as best we know how. Our garden, shop and events are the visible parts of that. Less visible is the fabric that connects it all.

Those close to the project will know that many of the people who contribute to Mangaroa Farms are also the people who call this place home. That exchange emerges from the natural culture of this rural area, of neighbours helping neighbours, long before this project began. We acknowledge and give thanks for the local community that binds this place together.

Today we want to share the next chapter for our residential housing at Mangaroa Farms.

We’ll be offering a maximum of 11 farm-adjacent home sites on Katherine Mansfield Drive, released gradually over the next five years. These new home sites were chosen for their natural adjacency to existing homes and road infrastructure, with northern-facing slopes and comfortable elevation. Through the consenting process we’ve worked to make sure the built environment sits with the land rather than on it, with landscaping plans to protect and enhance the existing native ecosystem. The sites, design guidelines and onboarding process are shaped so the people who live here contribute to that stewardship, not just live beside it.

Because the farm sits in a charitable trust, proceeds from these sales aren’t private profit. They return to the trust and fund the mahi here. This will go into planting trees, growing highly nutritious kai, delivering accessible place-based learning, and reforestation along the Mangaroa River.
